Packing Guidelines
Answer
If you have not started thinking about what you are going to bring to Canada, it is time you do so. As you begin to plan, you are going to have to decide between what you need to bring and what you want to bring. Some students try to pack everything they have into their suitcase but very few do so successfully! This is also unwise and unnecessary, so start planning now. Be sure to follow the baggage restrictions of your airline to avoid extra fees at the airport. This information can be found on the respective airlines’ website. (Some airlines have extra baggage allowance for international students travelling to Canada for the first time)
Please remember the shape and color of your luggage and attach a name /address label to your luggage. You can use the U of T Scarborough address provided above. If you cannot find your luggage at the pickup carousel, please report it to the airline luggage counter before coming out to meet our staff.
To help you decide what you should include in your suitcase, we have outlined the items that will be provided to you as part of the program and what has been suggested by former Green Path students.
Items We Provide
These items will be provided to all students for the duration of the Green Path Program, and most of the items can be kept afterwards. (It is ok to bring your own if you wish)
- Comforter or blanket
- Bed sheets
- Pillow and pillowcase
- Kitchen supplies (i.e., plates, bowls, cups, pots, cutlery, kettle, toaster, cutting board, rice cooker)
- Cleaning supplies (i.e., cleaning products, mop, broom, vacuum cleaner)
Things to Bring to Canada
- Clothes and shoes, including formal outfits (not everything, but enough)
- Summer light duvet
- Laptop / tablet (required for summer program)
Remember: we will take you grocery shopping every weekend during the Green Path Program!
Things You MAY NOT Need to Bring to Canada
It is better to buy the following items after your arrival in Canada, due to reasons such as size, cost, and usage:
- Extra toileries (soap, shampoo, etc.)
- Household appliance (e.g. iron)
- Food – Canadian Customs will not allow food/meat to be brought into Canada
- Printer – Too heavy to carry and inexpensive to purchase in Canada
- Towels, blankets, bedding – They take up a lot of room and are inexpensive to purchase. A basic set is provided in your accommodation arrangements
- Sports equipment – It may take up a lot of room or cost extra to bring
